Suits, Sephora, and Savings: The 2nd-Annual JCPenney Suit-Up Event was a Success!

Author: Elizabeth Kolb, Class of '20

This past Sunday, September 8, JCPenney Mishawaka at the University Park Mall, the Meruelo Family Center for Career Development, and the Office of Student Enrichment teamed up to provide an evening of discounts - and fun - to Notre Dame students. The event was designed to provide affordable access to professional clothing for the upcoming Fall Career Fair on September 17th, as well as for interviews throughout the semester. There were discounts up to 60% off business and business casual clothing, free makeovers at Sephora, free hair consultations, and free samples, as well as a table stacked high with cupcakes and a DJ on the top floor.

Amber Moore, store manager at JCPenney Mishawaka, said that the idea came from the home office of JCPenney, which was looking to engage with students in the area. “We really stepped it up this year,” she said, “so that students can have time to shop, get measured, consult a stylist - real one-on-one time, instead of just coming in and shopping like normal.”

It was definitely a success - over 300 students came to the event to shop, get makeovers and consultations, collect prizes, and even dance to the DJ’s music. One lucky student won a $100 JCPenney gift card at the end of the night. I spoke with some of the students who came on Sunday to see what they were looking for:

Kathleen C., senior: “I’m here because I had a job last summer, and I kept complaining that I didn’t have enough business clothing.”

Tsion S., graduate student with the ESTEEM program: “I’m trying to get professional attire for the Career Fair next week, where I’m looking to land a position in healthcare.”

Richard H., junior: “I’m looking for shoes and a shirt for my suit to complete my look for the Fall Career Fair.”

Aidee B., first-year: “I’m here because of the deals, and because the Office of Student Enrichment gave gift cards to students who couldn’t afford to shop - it gives an opportunity to students who need financial help to be here.”

We at the Meruelo Family Center for Career Development would like to thank JCPenney Mishawaka for hosting this amazing event, and all of you for coming - we hope to see you at the next one!
